the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  (John 1:5)

For you are dust and to dust you shall return.

– Genesis 3:19

We have entered the holy and penitential season of Lent. The Lenten liturgical season reflects Jesus’ 40 days and nights praying and fasting in the desert (Luke 4: 1 – 13), as well as the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the wilderness during the Exodus (Book of Exodus, Deut. 8:2). Lent, from the Anglo-Saxon word “lencten” meaning Spring, ushers in a penitential season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Lent was not formalized until the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, though some type of penitential preparation is believed to have been practiced before then. We pray everyone has a blessed and fruitful Lent this year.

Lent spans three months this year: part of February, March, and part of April. Each month of the Catholic calendar focuses on a particular devotion. In February the Catholic church honors the Holy Family and in March our devotion turns to St. Joseph. And, of course, in April our focus is on Easter with particular devotion to the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit. There is something for everyone this Lent.

As we continue through the winter months while looking ahead with anticipation to Spring, God plants seeds in us for new growth through our Lenten practices just as He works in nature to spur new growth. With still shortened days it may be a time of continued holy hibernation when many have the opportunity to spend some cozy time indoors with family members and with our Lord. We, like many people, enjoy delicious plant-based comfort foods like stews, soups, and casseroles that warm us when there is a chill in the air. These simple foods are also ideal for Lent when fasting and abstinence are practiced.

This would be a great time to pick up two of our books, Into the Quietude and Change the Food, Change the World. Into the Quietude provides the perfect avenue for more deeply entering into the holy and penitential season of Lent with our Lord. Filled with practical and holy reflections, this is an ideal book to read in front of a cozy fireplace or a sunny nook in your home. It is also a natural companion for your other spiritual reading beckoning you to spend more time in prayer each day. In addition to prayer, consider spending some time thinking about how a whole food, plant-based diet can help you to simplify your menu, stay healthy and keep your immune system strong. Our Change the Food, Change the World book and tee shirts point to the Holy connection that exists between our Creator and our food and can remind you and those around you to eat a little more mindfully, healthfully and avoid chronic diseases (like heart disease and diabetes) that can make you most vulnerable to the ill-effects of pathogens, like Coronaviruses.

All of our tees are always a comfy addition to your year-round wardrobe. These specially designed tees are great pointers to God and make perfect gifts for birthdays and holidays, including Easter. Browse our variety of Men’s and Women’s tees and enjoy all of our designs!
